Vogue, fad, trend, rage, these are few synonyms, usually heard while one is discussing “fashion”. The term ‘fashion’, finds its origin in the Latin term ‘Factio’, which means ‘do/make’. It is a fixation or a mania which has forever fascinated the masses from all fractions of age, from every nook and corner of the globe. Even a man saying ‘he doesn’t care what he wears; every morning chooses his clothes, which say how he feels that morning!’ It is validated by “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with the ideas, the way we live, fashion is what is happening.”, quoted by the famed fashion designer and a much revered style icon Coco Chanel.
Fashion is Omnipresent. Fashion, is not just a term. It is a language in itself, the language of expression. Though commonly used with reference to clothing, it is very certainly and immeasurably present in the vast world of art, architecture, literature, cuisine and furniture too, for an artist can be seen expressing fashion through his paintings, an architect through his drawings, a poet through his poetry and a chef through his recipes. Fashion is Unpredictable! Like every other field, change is the only constant in the world of fashion as well. Rather the fashion scholars and traders state that it is such a volatile industry that it, once identified, begins to alter every six months! One might think of grabbing a hot new Valentino or a Tag heuer or a Bonaldo, and discover much to his surprise, a swift revolution in the very trend! At the moment, four major fashion hubs on the planet are known to be Paris, New york, Milan and London, which are always looked up with great esteem by rest of the world for their grand impact on the rest of the globe. Ideas contributed at the international level, by India, in setting the stage for certain rages have sold like hot cakes globally, be it the art of ‘embroidery’ or the use of ‘bindi’ by the most celebrated brand Prada during one of its recent fashion shows.
Employment Opportunities in the fashion industry is quite high. Fashion has literally contracted the world into a single global village. This industry has grown with such leaps and bounds that today product ideas are crafted on paper in one state, produced in another and traded all over the globe! Not only this, fashion as a business as well as a source of employment, has given a life-size boost to the economy, millions being involved in the processes of buying, selling, producing, transporting, advertising / commercializing etc.
Fashion has some Social Role also. Concluding the piece, a little light can be thrown on the humble revolution, being brought up these days, by the fashion industry i.e. Fashion for social causes. In other words, today the fashion fraternity is using it as a tool in order to serve one cause or the other, for raising funds for charities, for raising money for cancer patients, for donations to child sanatorium etc., thus taking care of its social and moral responsibilities too.
