We have all read about the early-uncivilized men in history. They did not wear clothes, ate raw meat, lived just like wild animals do. Whenever, we speak about our nation India, our hearts fill up with pride. We have sent a rocket to the moon, we are slowly becoming a superpower of the world, we proudly call us citizens of a developing country. And there are so many statistics to prove that right. The GDP, per capita income, import export, nuclear power generation and so many facts to prove we are moving up the curve of development.
Well there are some startling facts that no one seems to address while singing the songs of progression. The male sex ratio in India is 109.4 in the age group of 0-6. In an estimate by the Canadian journal Lancet 500,000 girls are killed annually in India before they are born. The sex selection and sex selective industry in India is estimated to be a 1000 crore rupee industry. All these facts have nothing to do with our well decorated growth statistics but these pose a serious question – Why are so many girls killed even before they are born?
Ever since the beginning of time, women have been undermined and suppressed everywhere and especially more so in India. The religions and customs have been shaped to promote male chauvinism at its worst. In the 1900s widows were burnt if their husbands died. In 2014, we don’t burn them but with technology we kill them before they are even born. All customs and rituals that we observe in our everyday life shout out one truth that all women are made for men and surprisingly no matter how much we progress we are blind to that obvious fact. Women have been deemed the enemy of the society and it’s so deep rooted in our culture that even an IIM degree fails to detach it. Whenever someone becomes pregnant everyone starts to pray for a male child. A male childbirth is joyous and merits happiness while a female childbirth is considered to be a curse.
A girl simply translates to trouble in an Indian household. The only purpose in a girl’s life is to get married and serve a man and for that too a girl’s family is asked a hefty dowry. A girl won’t be able to work and earn money back to the house, instead the family has to pay the dowry so why not kill the trouble. With what modern technology has to offer, abortion is the best thing possible. The law prohibits sex determination as well as female foeticide but this foetus killing operation keeps growing on.The horrors of widow burning have moved on to abortions, our mentality has not changed. We are still living in the middle ages as uncivilized and as savage as the Neanderthals.
